Direct from an acclaimed run at the Edinburgh Festival, and following the success of the Oscar-winning film Hamnet, this compelling drama offers a fascinating insight into William Shakespeare – the man behind the legend.
It is 1606. England is gripped by fear and uncertainty. Isolated in his lodgings to avoid a deadly contagion, Shakespeare finds himself living through turbulent times. A suspicious King James, shaken by the recent Gunpowder Plot, sees conspiracies everywhere, while closer to home, Shakespeare struggles with demands from every direction.
Actors clamour for new roles. His brother pleads for assistance. His wife longs to reclaim their marriage. His lover desires affection. Above all, the voice of his beloved son, Hamnet, serves as a constant reminder of the legacy he never had the chance to pass on and the deep love he still carries.
Haunted by memories, ghostly voices and the ceaseless tolling of church bells, Shakespeare turns to the only refuge he knows – his writing. Amid the chaos, he creates some of the greatest masterpieces ever written, including King Lear, Macbeth and Antony and Cleopatra.
Written by Michael Barry and brought to you by the team behind The Eva Cassidy Story, this captivating new play explores Shakespeare the man, the father, the actor and the entrepreneur. Ambitious, troubled and deeply human, we meet a Bard striving to make sense of a world in turmoil while creating some of literature’s most enduring works.
